Trading practices in Iceland have changed considerably through the centuries. The monopolistic trade of the Danish is to be found no more, however the houses in Neðstikaupstaður are built during that era of monopoly. This form of trade was alleviated in 1787 and in 1855 Icelanders gained full freedom of trade.
