Trade schools and further education
Ósk School of Domestic Science was founded in Ísafjörður in the autumn of 1912 at the initiative of the Ósk Women's Association. There were twelve girl students during the school's first winter of teaching. The Ósk Women's Association operated the domestic science school until 1941. At that point in time, new laws were enacted on domestic science schools and subsequently the municipality of Ísafjörður took over the running of the school. A large and imposing school building was erected at Austurvegur during the period 1945-1948. The course of studies was extended from four months to nine and the school could take up to forty students. Ósk School of Domestic Science also provided cooking and craft courses for the public. The domestic college merged with the college of further education in 1990.
Ísafjörður College of Further Education first received students in the autumn of 1970 in the old junior school at Aðalstræti. The college was a major contributor to further education in the West Fjords and for the community in Ísafjörður. In the autumn of 1974 evening classes were introduced in Ísafjörður, at the initiative of the College of Further Education. Classes were offered for adults in English, Danish, French, mathematics, typing and bookkeeping. The evening school was the forerunner of the adult education department in the Ísafjörður College of Further Education which was founded in 1981 and one could say that it was succeeded by the West Fjords Educational Centre which was founded in 1999.
Ísafjörður College of Further Education moved to new premises in Torfanes in 1983 and the technical domestic science colleges were merged under the same roof. At that point in time teaching in trades was introduced along with academic studies for matriculation and a new building for technical and trade subjects was built.
