Drama

An interest in drama was brought to the society by people who had moved to the town from Denmark from other countries or who had studied or worked abroad. The play Útilegumennirnir (The Outlaws) by Matthías Jochumsson was staged in the warehouse of the Ásgeirsverslun premises on Aðalstræti in the winter of 1879 and from that time on dramatic productions were regular events in the town. The advent of a community centre at the initiative of the Good Templars awakened further interest in drama and this interest flourished as never before when the Templars' Lodges built a magnificent theatre in 1905 at Templaragata 5, which later became Hrannargata. It was the finest theatre in the country at that time with a stage and balcony. The Ísafjörður drama club was founded in 1922 and was very active during the following years and decades. Subsequent to a number of periods of waning interest in drama in the town the Litli leikklúbburinn (Little drama club) was founded in 1965. The club is still active and it offers one or two dramatic productions each winter.
