Associations and organisations

At the turn-of-the-century 1900 the community in Ísafjörður was buzzing with life. All kinds of organisations were formed. One could mention for example the Order of Good Templars, the first organisation open to the whole community, independent of social standing or position, which was also open to women. There were many who gained their first experience of working in organisations, experience that benefited them in other organisations such as trade unions. Music and theatre were also honoured in the lodges.

The Ísafjörður tradesman's Association was founded in 1888 with the guiding aim of protecting its members' interests and furthering their education. Its members founded a health fund and reading room and supported the founding of the Trades School in Ísafjörður. The first trade union was founded in 1906 but was short lived. It was not until 1916 that workers and sailors founded trade unions that became established in the town. A few years later they came to power in the municipality in cooperation with tradesmen and Templars under the leadership of the Liberals.

The Woman's Union Ósk was founded in 1907 by several bourgeois ladies under the leadership of Camilla Torfason. Women's rights were discussed at the meetings but the union's tasks concerned charity first and foremost. The union took part in founding the domestic college in 1912. Many people felt uncomfortable about the living conditions endured by senior citizens in the town. This was the catalyst for the forming of the Hlíf Women's Union. Members began to hold annual events for the town's senior citizens with entertainment and meals. Three years later the womens' union was formally founded. The women in Hlíf were also active in charity and cultural work.
